The Story of MedWand™

In late 2013, having just finished working with Google on telemedicine projects, Dr. Samir Qamar received a call from his sister, complaining of a cough. Wanting to listen to her lungs, he asked her to place the smartphone's mic against her chest -- to his surprise, he heard lung and heart sounds. Always receiving calls from patients, family, and friends for medical advice and not being able to examine them, Samir saw an opportunity to supercharge telemedicine by housing multiple diagnostics into a singular handheld device that could be used to examine patients remotely…..and the idea for MedWand was born.

Dr. Qamar met Bob Rose, the founder and CEO of Cypher Scientific, and the MedWand design was first conceived. Cypher Scientific was a contract engineering company that specialized in medical equipment, video, and specialty computing products, making the design initiative for MedWand a perfect fit. MedWand Solutions was founded in 2014. Together, they raised the initial funding and began building the company. MedWand was designed to replicate as many in-office tools for gathering vital signs as possible within a single device and to place them under the control of the examining clinician, regardless of the clinician's or patient's physical location. By leveraging decades of experience and insights in design, manufacturing, and operations across healthcare, aerospace, defense, communications, and consumer electronics, the team transformed a basic idea in 2014 into an FDA-cleared, disruptive, industry-leading product dedicated to fulfilling the potential of Telemedicine.

Cypher Scientific was merged into MedWand in 2021 to enable the engineering team to continue to focus all their energy on MedWand and its supporting ecosystem. MedWand received FDA 510(k) clearance on July 22, 2022, and has obtained multiple regulatory clearances in additional global markets since then.
